R-E-S-P-E-C-T, I’m not getting it.

Life is hard for BubblyGirl right now.  She isn’t very respectful.  She doesn’t respect people’s personal space, their body, her possessions, my possessions or…my hearing (man, that girl is LOUD).  So, she spends a large part of her day in her room, screaming.  Yesterday I lost it when she went into her room and got totally naked after I had JUST gotten her dressed.  Then, as I’m emptying the dishwasher, she reaches down to grab a HUGE knife.  She has it in her hand and begins to run away with it.  She took one to the backside as she ran past.  It was partly me trying to stop her, but it was also because I was frustrated.  Appropriate?  Absolutely not.  She was STUNNED.  She proceeded to spend the entire night telling FPD how I had “beat her butt”.  That is what left an impression on her.  That is what she’s used to when she gets into trouble.  I felt really bad that all the times we’ve been disciplining her by giving her “time ins” or taking away possessions, maybe she’s not getting it.  But, when she gets one on the backside, she KNOWS she’s done it.  I’m not a spanker, and I apologized to her when it happened.  Mama was so sad, she was scared you would cut yourself, yadda, yadda.  I tend to think that beating begets beating.  I spank her, she hits her sister in frustration.  But, I’ve also never had a kid who constantly tells me to “just beat me and be finished with it”.  UGH.  I’m near the end of my rope today.

–FullPlateMom,
who is feeling like another plane is calling me.  Tahiti anyone?
