This is the first of my posts to our sweet Gigi, recording the process of her adoption, and all that goes with it.
Hi sweet girl,
I wanted you to know that in the midst of all the hubbub of my quitting my job, your big sister recovering, and the big home renno, I took my first ASL class tonight. For the next four weeks I’ll be taking classes twice a week in 2.5 hour blocks. At first, I was sure 2.5 hours was going to drag on and on. I have a short attention span, and doing anything for even 25 minutes takes concerted effort for me.
This was worth it. I loved it. I loved the idea that this was going to get us one step closer to communicating with you. It felt like one step closer to you. I am never more determined to learn or to do then when it comes to learning or doing for my kids. I am determined to learn this for you. Tonight I was told that only 3-5% of hearing parents with deaf children learn to sign. No judgment, just surprising to me. I can’t see any other way of really understanding you then giving you every tool we can to communicate.
I’ll keep at it, and hopefully, by the time I get to come for you, I’ll be proficient enough that we can learn and grow together.
