Here Goes Nothing.

In five short hours I’ll get up (3:30am) and the journey to Gigi will begin.  Tomorrow we’ll fly to Chicago and then directly into Shanghai.  We’ll tour for three days and then ride the bullet train to Gigi’s province.  We’ll meet her on December 14th and she will be adopted on December 15th. I am…

With No Expectations, We Rise.

This week, on Cate’s one year Famiversary, I’ve been thinking a lot about those first few days with our girl, and what we did to prepare for them.  Cate was living in an awesome medical foster home because of her eye tumor.  They were providing so much more than just eye care.  She was being…

A Letter to ResponsiBoy as our Adventure Comes to a Close

Hi Sweets, Yes, I still call you that.  Remember when I asked you to comb your hair before dinner that one night and when you came to get the comb from me I instinctively reached out and started combing your hair myself?  Yeah, sometimes I forget just how close you are to not really needing…

All The Things I’ll Miss…

China has become a second home to me in a way Ghana never did.  I don’t know why.  I feel bad about it.  It’s just not the same there that it is here.  There are so many things I have fallen in love with here that I feel this crushing weight when it comes time…

Pearl River Cruising with New Friends.

I have reached out more with this adoption then I ever have in the past.  When you’re left with less in country support than you’ve ever had in the past, after you just up and LEFT to get your child with no real plans, you kind of have to look around you for companionship and…

Coming to America.

This is a picture-less post.  Sorry y’all.  They barely let you inside the U.S. Consulates with underwear on due to security concerns (can’t blame ’em), so there was NO way I was getting a camera in. I want to take a moment to record what the immigration process is like for an adopted child and…

Poppy on Safari

Yesterday had us saying goodbye to our FullPlateBupa (my amazing dad).  We’re not usually emotional people, but y’all there was some heavy sadness, as we waited in our boarding area for our train to Guangzhou and watched him board the train to Beijing, before being pushed through the turnstile by the flood of people boarding…

From ResponsiBoy’s View…

We’re off to Guangzhou today!  So sad to say goodbye to my dad, but yesterday, I finally got a chance to go through the pictures ResponsiBoy took with his camera from in Poppy’s province.  Considering how hard the last couple of days have been, these make me smile.   Even when this is hard, he’s…

The Day I Fed my Baby Pigeon Eggs, and Other Lessons Learned.

If you follow me on Facebook, you know yesterday and today were ROUGH.  We had major guide issues and then we had issues with the local travel agent trying to shake us down for a whole bunch of cash for a hotel bill that should be paid by credit card.  The guide has been fired…

Getting to Know You.

This is the view from our window…But, nonetheless, it was a good day.  A day of getting to know our girl a little better.  Today, there were smiles. Along with getting to know Poppy a little better, I’m getting to know ResponsiBoy better too.  There couldn’t be a sweeter 12 year old in the world….

With One Red Thumb.

I signed the papers that allowed us to adopt our girl officially. There’s a 24 hour period where we could have changed our minds.  This is the point that Mighty’s second family declined to move forward with his adoption.  Knowing that and then having Poppy for the mere 24 hours that I did and loving…

And Then She Became Ours.

I’d like to start this with a rocking shout out to my dad for being my photographer for the day, and to Responsiboy for being our videographer.  And then to the both of them for spending the next four hours driving all around attempting to change money and do all the other things adoption requires….
